Because on the one hand it insulates the body's own heat and prevents it from being released into the environment and on the other hand it absorbs sweat and transports it to the outside. This is how you stay warm and dry.
Ideally, when it’s cold, dress in three layers according to the layering principle:
1st sweat transport layer (thermal underwear)
2nd layer of insulation (e.g. sweater or fleece jacket)
3rd Weather protection (e.g. rain jacket or softshell jacket)
The thermal underwear should always come first and lie directly on the skin. This is also very pleasant due to the special manufacturing method of the fabric, as it fits the body like a second skin.

My husband said they really keep you warm. He was in 5° weather yesterday and they work very well. But they do not run true to size. He is 6 foot four 235 pounds. I got him to ask and he said they’re kind of tight.

This item is great. I didnt know what to expect because I've never bought clothes for the cold before (I'm from Florida). I bought these for a trip to North Dakota. (-7 degrees). I can tell you that I used these everyday and never felt the cold in my legs. All I had were jeans over this.

I would recommend going up a size, especially if you are tall. Otherwise I am fully satisfied, the fabric is thick and dense. I've already completed my first bike tour and the thermal properties are great, warm and dry!
